Solid flooring is when each board consists of one solid piece of hardwood. The most common thickness is ¾" and widths vary from two to five inches. These floors experience the normal expansion and contraction with changes in relative humidity. They are designed to be installed on or above grade (where humidity levels are more controllable).

We also recommend installing solid Hardwood flooring over plywood sub-floor in order to enable the planks to be nailed down using a two inch cleat. There are many wood species available such as Red or White Oak, Maple, Birch, Ash, Cherry, Walnut, Jatoba (Brazilian Cherry), Cabreuva (Santos Mahogany), Hickory, Beech, and other exotic species.

Engineered wood is made of several layers of different woods or different grades of the same wood stacked and glued together under heat and pressure. It is less likely to be affected by changes in humidity and can be installed above, on, or below ground level.

Engineered wood flooring works well in kitchens, basements, and bathrooms where light moisture might be present. Still, it doesn't hold up to really wet areas such as basements that flood frequently. Nor does it hold up to kids' bathrooms which, as you may know, tend to flood frequently.

Laminate flooring faithfully reproduces wood, stone, and other natural materials. Laminate is easy to install and in many cases can be done by home owners.

Unlike wood, which can dent, laminate flooring is almost impervious to dents and scratches. Laminate flooring has what's called in the industry a "wear layer" that protects the photographic layer underneath. Some manufacturers, give very generous 25+ year warranties on this wear layer.
